I made this pastel as the afternoon deepened and blue shadows crept across the meadow in Pumpkin Hollow. I love how the goldenrod glows in the late afternoon light. I was working fast to “beat the light” which leant this piece a very energetic quality indeed. This is one of my favorite paintings because of that fast mark-making—it feels real to me. I also love to paint this spot knowing that the wetland meadow depicted is now conserved through the Franklin Land Trust, and with it habitat for many plants, insects, mammals and birds.
